Can Wrestling Schools Utilize Obstacle Race Training?

By Rob Sutter

It seems like, at least nowadays, watching wrestlers train to get to the top is more entertaining than seeing those who have already made names for themselves. World Wrestling Entertainment is perhaps the most prime example of this when it comes to their developmental territory, NXT. In this particular promotion, people who are vying for spots on the main roster work hard in order to adapt to WWE's style and gain televised experience on a smaller scale. Can obstacle race training prove to be one way they can work to get better?

Triple H had developed NXT into a training facility and I think that his own accents are visibly shown compared to RAW or SmackDown. NXT feels far more old school in terms of its approach, since storylines are given better build. They have more time to flesh such aspects out since they aren't apt to advertise shows, brands, or anything of that nature. Wrestlers also have ample time to work in the ring so that they can learn to handle themselves when the spotlight is on them.

One of the big problems that I can cite with wrestlers coming up too early is that they don't go through the developmental process that others do. Even Daniel Bryan, who I find to be one of the greatest technical wrestlers of the past decade, had to go through training as well so that he could adapt to WWE's style. However, there are those who aren't given the time to do so, such as the masked marvel Sin Cara. He may have been a star in Mexico but his own style did not mesh well with most of the main roster.

While this is all fine, what kind of role would obstacle race training play on the matter? I think that it would do wonders for stars that are more agile than powerful and there are a few which fit the bill if you're able to catch NXT. Adrian Neville is considered "The Man That Gravity Forgot" and you can see that through his array of high-flying maneuvers. This is just one example of someone who could prove themselves in events the likes of Spartan Race.

NXT is brimming with stars and I think that it's just a matter of time before many of them are able to work with others on the main shows we see every Monday and Friday evening. Neville is just one name to consider, though, as you have others like Bray Wyatt, Kassius Ohno and Paige to name just a few. I think that wrestling has a stellar future and it will be carried out by the stars that are able to make it to the main roster. Obstacle race training may just be one step in the process.
