Thriving Philadelphia Art Galleries

By Helen Georgette

Visitors who are sure that Philadelphia's art scene peaks with Robert Indiana's Love sculpture and the Rocky statue will be thrilled to grasp that the City of Brotherly Love is teeming with great art destinations. American history may be foremost in most people's minds when thinking about Philadelphia, but the culture and art that flows thru Philly is equally as extraordinary as the Liberty Bell or Independence Hall. A colorful local artistic community thrives in the city and the gigantic number of Philadelphia art galleries available makes their work available to enjoy

First Friday in Philadelphia

Seeded all throughout the city - from the outdoor mosaics of Philly's Magic Gardens to the Picasso's hanging in the Museum of Art - there are galleries in Philadelphia that cater to styles from eclectic to traditional and conventional. Many of the galleries are situated in the Old Town district and are open for viewing during the time of the favored "First Friday" art events.

Slingluff Gallery

Found in Fishtown and owned by Jonathon Slingluff and his wife Leigh, the couple offer monthly showings that can range from local street art to modern and contemporary art from across the globe. This is undoubtedly one of the more favored Philadelphia art galleries thanks to the revolving exhibits that appeal to introductory art backers as well as those with a practiced eye.

Locks Gallery

Located in a stately 3-story building in Washington Square, Locks Gallery enjoys a reputation as among the most popular art galleries in Philadelphia. Utilising its influence in world art circles, Locks Gallery has helped raise the profile of several local artists such as Edna Andrade, Jane Irish and others.

The Clay Studio

Part of the Old Town gallery district, The Clay Studio was opened to give new artists a place to display their creations and work. It has since developed into the best place in Philadelphia to see and purchase unique arts. Together with the gallery and store, The Clay Studio also offers classes for those wanting to create their own works.

Schmidt-Dean

For over 25 years Christopher Schmidt has been displaying his art and that of others from his Chestnut Street gallery. A one-time "Best of Philly" winner, Schmidt exhibits a good range of work includingsculpture, photography and painting, generally by local artists.

Biello Martin Studio
