What To Know About Brass Once Fired

By Jon Himler

Brass once fired is exactly what it sounds like. These are the casings of shells that have been fired off before. Brass or nickel casings cost much less than store-bought casings and are a popular choice among those who enjoy recreational shooting.

Often these are gathered up from firearms training places, both federal and state. Sometimes the units are taken from privately owned shooting ranges. The pieces are inspected and then sorted by type and size. Once the sorting process is complete, casings are packaged up and sold to recreational and commercial reloaders.

When you purchase casings, it is done with the understanding that the units come as is. That is, most distributors do not guarantee products that are without blemishes. Most are reconditioned and cleaned so that they work well with reloaders and usually there are no problems.

Another benefit with purchasing these types is that they are easy to find in bulk quantities and come at a reasonable price. There are numerous dealers who package these in bulk. Those who are regular reloaders appreciate the inexpensive price tag. There are some who choose to sell left over casings to companies involved with remanufacturing. The metals are valuable and wholesalers buy them back from consumers in an effort to resell them.

Not every casing will be the same. Refurbished kinds are sent through inspection and verified for caliber. There are some distributors who will have them polished and there are some that choose not to. Items that have gone through more processing are expected to reload easier. Pay attention to the grade, as the ideal one includes those that have been polished, deprimed and cleaned.

Those who own guns or enjoy reloading may be interested in brass once fired. These casings are often available in bulk quantities at an inexpensive price and are remanufactured to work with reloaders. Be sure to do research and find a brand that offers a favorable grade of casings.
