The Correct Manner To Clean And Store Horses Saddlery

By Steven James

Proper maintenance and storage of saddlery and equipment will go a long way in ensuring that horses are well taken care of. When these items are kept in an optimum condition, they are able to last long and provide a person with good ride quality. This implies that they are the key to riding your animal comfortably.

When it comes to the storage of saddlery, the atmosphere of the place matters a lot. This is because a damp area will lead to mold growth in these items while a hot and dry location will cause the leather to become brittle and therefore cause it to crack. The best place to store your items is one with a warm and dry atmosphere.

It is important to first inspect the saddlery before storing it. This will help in uncovering any areas that need to be repaired. When it comes to storing rugs, it is important to throw in some moth balls in the rug trunk, together with the rugs in order to prevent moth damage.

Horse rugs should always be taken outdoors frequently so as to aerate them and check whether any rodents or moths have damaged them in any way. The best way to aerate them is to shake them vigorously. Any buckles on these rugs should be lubricated with Vaseline in order to prevent tarnishing.

Those equipment that will not be used urgently should be taken apart. This is due to the reason that the buckles holding the equipment together tend to stiffen when not in use for a long period. It is imperative that one cleans and thoroughly oils any leather-work before storage.

The best way to ensure that the saddlery will last for years to come and give you wonderful service is by properly cleaning and storing it. Horse tack is suitably cleaned by use of a wet sponge or a soft piece of cloth. For effective cleaning, warm water and the appropriate saddle soap should be used.

For the metallic equipment, one should use a soft cloth to wipe them or apply a metal polish. When there is any grease on the leather, care should be taken to ensure that it is first soaped before getting washed. This will help to prevent "jockeys" from forming.

When the horse saddlery is very dirty, one should first dilute some soda crystals in lukewarm water and then clean the equipment. In case of any contagious infection in your farm, make sure that you first isolate all the equipment that may have been used by the horses. Then, sterilize it in soda water and dry it properly before making use of it again.
