Choosing The Best Quarterback Shoulder Pads

By Katy Dinardi

Anyone that has ever played football can attest that it can be an extremely violent sport that can lead to a myriad of injuries for players of all ages and sizes. Players that play the quarterback, running back, or wide receiver position will need gear that is lighter and offers them plenty of range, mobility and comfort, while still giving them the protection they need. Choosing quarterback shoulder pads is important and should not be taken lightly.

The first thing people should know is that there is a big difference in styles of equipment for different players and for different positions on the field. The best shoulder pads for quarterbacks will be a lot lighter than those for other positions to increase mobility and range of motion. In fact, they are usually up to forty percent lighter than other styles made for linebackers and other positions.

Some quarterbacks do a lot of running during the game and might consider getting a pad that is normally reserved for running backs. These are very lightweight but are designed to take a lot of punishment. Some quarterbacks might find these a bit too constrictive to throw, so they need to be tried on before purchasing.

Some quarterbacks even turn to the style of pad made for defensive backs. These are extremely lightweight so that the player does not lose much speed and still has a high range of motion. These high impact shoulder pads are made to take huge hits so should give the player plenty of protection.

Those that are seeking even more protection can look into items like rib protectors. Rib protectors cover exposed areas and offer a lot more protection from injuries to the chest and ribs. They come in a lot of sizes, styles and models so players need to pick one that is comfortable and fits them well.

The most important thing to remember when choosing gear is that player safety is key. This is especially true for younger players that may be more prone to injury and will need more protection. Players should never put themselves at risk by using equipment that is the wrong size or does not work well with their style of play.

There are a number of things to think about when choosing quarterback shoulder pads. There is the weight to consider but also mobility and the level of protection it offers. Those that are outfitted in the correct equipment will enjoy the game more and have less chance of getting injured seriously.
