Getting Acquainted With The Great Coyote Hunting NC Has To Offer

By Xie Bao

The excellent coyote hunting NC offers is a fascinating sport, enjoyed by many. While there has been some criticism from the Chapel Hill crowd, this is a public service. Coyotes were imported to North Carolina and are not one of the native species in this State, and are doing a lot of harm.

The most important thing to remember when pursuing coyotes is that they are members of the dog family. Anyone who has tried to sneak up on a dog knows how difficult this is, as their hearing, color vision and sense of smell is just too good. Being wild, these predators have these senses honed to perfection, and any coyote hunting tips must be built around these facts.

It is possible to hunt at night using lights, but it is difficult to be certain of targeting the right species under these conditions. Other than this, you can lie in wait or call them to you. Ambushing them can take a long time for no result, so is not a popular choice, although sometimes used if circumstances favor this tactic.

This leaves calling as probably the most ethical and effective strategy. By imitating the noise a prey animal in distress makes, coyotes can be lured within range. It is important to do this as naturally as possible, so a local prey species should be used, initially at low volume, gradually increasing the loudness if necessary. Coyotes are used to being hunted, and are very wary.

Remember coyotes have the three strengths of hearing, vision, and smell. In order to succeed you must cancel out their strengths. Position yourself so that the predator will approach from upwind, so he cannot smell you. Wear appropriate camouflage for the terrain and season and keep quiet. He has very sensitive hearing, and responds immediately to any suspicious sound. Also avoid moving around. Movement focuses attention quickly and can create noise.

For those hunters new to North Carolina, it is important to note that the endangered red wolf shares the territory with the coyotes. So make absolutely sure of your identification before you pull the trigger. The red wolf is bigger than a coyote (slightly smaller than a gray wolf) with a distinctive tawny and black coloration. These colors are similar to some color variations of coyotes.

For newcomers to the coyote hunting NC has for enthusiasts, a good idea is to partner with an experienced hunter who knows the area. Joining a suitable local predator hunting group will also help you find somewhere to hunt, as they respond to calls for help from local ranchers. You are out to have fun, but take your time and make sure of a one-shot kill.
