Guidelines To Better Pronunciation In English

By Catalina Nielsen

If you come from a non-English speaking country and would want to learn the language, the only way to learn is to register for English classes. However, your teacher or tutor will only teach you the basics but much of the improvement will come out of class. Things like mastery of the language and pronunciation of words cannot be taught in class as it takes time. This is why you need to device ways to better pronunciation in English. Here are some tips that you may find useful towards achieving your goal of good articulation.

The first tip is to practice. There is no easy way out of this. Your articulation will not drastically improve simply because you are a frequent speaker of the language. You need to dedicate at least thirty minutes out of your busy schedule per day to practice. After some time, you will start to realize an improvement in your enunciation no matter how bad you were at the beginning.

When you learn a new word or vocabulary, you should always try to master how to pronounce it. The longer you pronounce a word incorrectly, the harder it will be for you to pronounce it the right way. Because of this, you should always try to know the correct articulation of every new word you learn.

You can also record yourself pronouncing different words on a tape recorder or computer and listen to them later on. Listening to yourself may be very difficult at first, however, you will soon get used to it and this will help you improve. Some of the articulation errors that you will hardly realize when speaking you can easily detect when listening to the tape.

You should also find role models and try to imitate them. Your role model must be someone eloquent in the language. Language role models are people who are eloquent in the language you are trying to learn and have worked very hard to get there. Role models can be your teacher, colleague, friend or anybody who is eloquent enough to be a role model.

It is going to be extremely difficult for you to improve your accent if most of them people around you do not speak English. This is why you will also need to choose friends who can help you achieve your goals. People who are fluent with their accent will greatly help you improve yours as well. This is because they would not want you to lag behind if you are in their company.

To be a good speaker, you must also be a good listener. You will learn a lot from other speakers when they speak especially if they are good at articulation. You should therefore not despise other speakers when they are on podium. Not only will you learn from other speakers but you can also learn from television programs.

These are some of the tips you can use to better pronunciation in English. You should not be afraid to make a mistake because from the mistakes people will correct you. This way, you will be a good speaker.
