Information On Ice Fishing Traps

By Mona Moody

The cold winter season can be very quiet in terms of activities, due to the chilling conditions which are associated with it. However, there are quite a number of recreational activities that individuals can do during this season. Some of these activities include skating or the less vigorous stiff like ice fishing which may require the laying down of ice fishing traps.

In order for one to set up a fish trap on top of ice, one must first equip himself with the right gear. Access to the underlying water mass is made via a hole. Drilling of this hole involves the use of tools such as the auger or manual cutting by the use of a saw. The size of the hole must not be too big or too small.

While drilling many holes, a fisherman is advised to drill them all at once. This would ensure that the noises that would otherwise scare the fish away are all made at once. On top of the auger, one should also carry a small strainer which is useful for removing thin crusts which form after a certain period of waiting.

Fishing holes must be made to fit with the type of trap which would be used. In essence, fish traps are made to sit above the hole on the surface and support a line which holds the bait. Also the gadgets are made to signal the fisherman whenever a catch has been made. Some devices would signal a catch by lowering a flag which is then reset after the fisherman takes the fish from the hook.

There are laws which govern the number of traps ice fishermen can place in a given area. These laws vary with different areas and so it is important for one to check with relevant authorities if the intention to install more than a few of these devices. It is always advisable to ensure that you have a license before going out fishing.

Ice fishermen need not to worry about the cost of purchasing a trap. This is because the market today is flooded with many types of traps which go for as little as ten dollars. They also come in different types of sizes and bright neon colors which are visible in the dark.

As some fishermen would brave the chilly winter cold with only several sweaters in an open field, others would prefer shelters while they fish. Although the shelter might not be a vital part of your gear, it can still be useful. Portable shelters which resemble tents are also sold together with the other trapping gear if you wish to purchase them.

Today, a fisherman can even order for ice fishing traps over the internet from the comfort of his home. There are websites which essentially market these products and facilitate their purchase over the internet. All that an individual has to do is visit the website, choose from the available models available, add it on his basket, fill in some personal details and click order.
