Pros And Cons Of Ballroom Instruction

By Kathryn Neal

Ballroom instruction can be an extremely effective way of adding aerobic exercise to your day. It can not only be great for your body but it can also improve your state of mind. Still, there are cautions to keep in mind; you should always check with your doctor to make sure you are capable of participating and you should also make sure you are not taken in by unethical instructors and studios.

Aerobic, or cardio, exercise is physical exertion that increases the intake of oxygen into the body. It strengthens your muscles, and it improves your circulation and makes your heart work more efficiently. At the same time it is important not to overdo it because you can injure your muscles and do more damage than good.

One great low impact workout is dancing. It includes the well known aerobic benefits but carries less risk of injury. It gives both your body and your mind a great workout. It helps with memory because you must do the dance steps in a particular order.

Ballroom dancing is one of the most popular dances today. Most people like to go with a partner and people dance both for social reasons and also competitive ones. Ballroom instruction is available in nearly every city and can help to ensure you get all of the benefits of dance.

Ballroom dancing is extremely popular with the elderly but has garnered interest in younger people in recent years. Still, there are precautions to keep in mind before signing up for ballroom instruction. You should talk to your doctor and see if he has any concerns. If you are currently under medical care you should not stop any of your regimens and keep any restrictions in mind when scheduling lessons.

Another area of concern for the elderly is being taken advantage of by instructors or studios. While most are honest and just want to run a good business, some others are known to commit fraud. Some of the red flags are dancers that pressure you to sign additional contracts after flirting with you or giving you extra attention.

Do not sign multiple, many year contracts that include unrealistic promises. It is unlikely you will become a famous, professional dancer. Look at yourself honestly and ask if you are just being flattered because you are spending your money. If so, then enjoy the attention just do not follow that by emptying your bank account. If you do become a victim of a scam then contact local law enforcement, it may be embarrassing to admit but the police may be able to help you recover your money and keep other people from becoming victims.

Regardless of your current health, ballroom instruction can help you become even healthier. Remember to start slow and do not overdo it in the first few weeks. You should also make sure that you have a realistic idea of what you can accomplish and recognize that this is a business and they are in it to make money; do not let yourself become the source of their retirement fund.
