A Brief Overview Of German Dog Names

By Heinz Kaufmann

If you're looking for an exceptional and fashionable name for your pet German Shepherd, then German names are perfect. As a matter of amusement the Germans don't name their pets with German names. They are looking for more common names such as Asterix, Cool Catch, Blitz and Lightning. These names are fascinating and exclusive.

A list of German names can be your basis of decision in choosing the right name for your pet. Although a non-German name would do, but if you are not from the canine's country of origin, it would also be good to have a name from its country of origin. Names to be considered are famous German personalities including Beethoven, Mozart and Elfriede.

You can also base the name in accordance with your German Shepherd's temperament. Why not name him Adler which is the German term for "eagle" if he has a carefree personality.

Hasso or Bello would also be good but then these are now counted as common names. They are similar to Spot, Fido or Tabby in America. Common German Shepherd names also include Babe, Chaos, Cheese, Ajax, Angel, Franz and Charlie. But naming your pet according to its temperament is still the best thing to do.

Another tip is to name them after literary artists and intellectuals. A bunch of them can be considered. You can opt from Siggi, Kafka, Goethe and Freud rather than just naming them ordinary names such as Sigmund.

Music enthusiasts can consider Amadeusor Mozart. But you must not be limited to traditional or old names. You can also Google for some pop artists such as Udo Lindenberg, Nena, or Austrian Falco to give your pet name with a newer sound. Another thing to be considered is to look at German literature. You can give Siegfried and Kriemhild for male and female German Shepherd respectively.

If you want a very light name then why not choose Asterix for a very witty puppy from the cartoon series by the same name. Really a robust and large dog like the German Shepherd can easily be named Obelix if it shows a happy-go-lucky nature and loves eating. Really the dog in the cartoon character was named in German also.

There are also German terms that exhibit specific character like the word Adalhard that means strong and noble. Baldur, on the other hand, means brave which is suitable for a daring pet.

Other names include the female name Heidi for noble, Hugo for intelligent, and Traute for trusted. You can also all Reinhard given that your German Shepherd is sturdy and has a striking appearance. These names are not even person names in Germany but they would sound good for your pets.
