A Succinct Intro To Swiss Army Knives

We all know knives are used to cut objects. If so, then are pocket knives used to cut pockets? Most people would give you a big "NO" and enumerate all the stuff that pocket knives are used for. A pocket knife is a tool consisting of packet-like handle where all the small tools are bent and fitted so it can be small enough to fit one's pocket.

The Swiss Army knife was designed for several purposes. Usually it contains not only a single knife but screw drivers, letter openers, can openers and others depending on the product.

These various tools are fitted into a cover handle and this is made possible by pivot mechanism.

Swiss Army knives are often red in colour carrying a cross and a shield as trademarks on its handle which connects the product to Switzerland since it emerged from Shwyz, Switzerland.

The phrase "Swiss Army" is a patent of Wenger and Victorinox, the two companies employed by the Swiss Army to produce pocket knives for them.

While "Swiss Army" was the trade mark of Wenger and Victorinox, the US army added the word knife into the combination which resulted in forming the now world renowned Swiss Army knife. Today, when people refer to Swiss Army knives what comes into one's mind is reliability, quality, multi-purpose and usefulness.

Being a wonderful tool, one might ask how Swiss Army knives were originated. Well, back in 1891. Karl Elsener, introduced a knife that can be considered Swiss original because pocket knives were invented by Germans.

Karl Elsener designed the Swiss knife as one having a packet like handle allowing it to fit other tools like cutting blade and corkscrew. This was to make it more attractive and distinct from Germany's pocket knives. He then formed the cross and shield logo and marked the rise of the Swiss Army knife.

As time passes the Swiss Army knife goes with the changes through its series of alterations. Today Swiss Army knives are available in different styles and include various tools according to the customer's preference and lifestyle.
